Bob Barnes with Sheridan House Family Ministries

BCH is very excited to announce that Bob Barnes with Sheridan House Family Ministries will be presenting “Leaving a Legacy That Lasts” at our October Monthly Support Group Meeting!

Bob Barnes has been the President of Sheridan House Family Ministries since 1974.  Sheridan House is a Residential Treatment Program for teenage boys and girls, a Marriage and Family Counseling Center, and Social Service Center offering food, clothing, furniture, and automobiles to single parents.  Currently, Sheridan House impacts the lives of over 90,000 people a year.

Bob presents seminars and conferences on Parenting and Marriage throughout North America.  He has a doctorate in counseling and received his education at Maryville College, and Florida Atlantic University.  Bob is also the host of a weekly radio program and the author of ten books for families, published in several languages.  Some of his best sellers are "Single Parenting" (Tyndale House Publishers), "Winning the Heart of Your Step-Child" (Zondervan Publishing House), "Ready for Responsibility" (Zondervan Publishing House), "Rock Solid Marriage" (Zondervan Publishing House), "We Need To Talk" (Zondervan Publishing House), and "Great Sexpectations" (Zondervan Publishing House).

Bob and his wife, Rosemary Johnson Barnes, have been married since 1972.  They have two married children, Torrey and Robey.

Jason and Donna Krumbine are the happy marital union of two pioneer families of the Florida homeschool movement - The Krumbines and The Masons.  They are also the founders of The Krumbine Learning Center.  Donna and Jason were both homeschooled through high school, and are college graduates.  Donna has taught both high school and elementary.  Jason is the author of “Fruitbasket from Hell” and “Explorers of the Unknown”, as well as the upcoming “Heaven’s Superhero”.  Together they have written “Story Starters” and “Essay Prompts”.  Currently, Jason and Donna are working towards a ministry of education for homeschooling.  For more information, please visit their web sites at www.thekrumbinelc.com and www.jasonkrumbine.com.

Annual Christmas Party & Pot-Luck Dinner

  Open to all homeschoolers, virtual school students & the public.

Please come out and enjoy an evening a fellowship, fun, food, and festivities.  There will be a pot-luck dinner, a gift give-away*, and entertainment throughout the night.

Note: Each students is asked to bring a $1.00 - $3.00 gift to exchange with another student of the same gender.  (Gifts should not cost anymore than $3.00 and boys will exchange gifts with boys and girls will exchange gifts with girls.)  Please marked the gift you bring as either “For Boy” or “for Girl”.

If you would like to provide entertainment during the evening, please let us know. 

Also, we are in need of students who can play the piano to provide background music at different times throughout the night.

This has always been a wonderful evening for our members and homeschool community.  We hope everyone can attend!

Homeschool Co-Op Classes: OPEN TO ALL HOMESCHOOLERS
Classes will be held every Wednesday and Thursday for 12 weeks.
Co-Op starts Wednesday/Thursday, January 14/15, 2009 (12-Week Semester)

Open to ALL homeschoolers - you do not need to be a BCH member.

IMPORTANT: This semester's Co-Op Classes are open to all homeschoolers.  You do not need to be a member of Broward Christian Homeschoolers (BCH) to attend classes.

This next semester's co-op classes will begin Wednesday, January 14, 2009, and Thursday, January 15, 2009).

Once again, we will be offering ballet classes on Thursdays.

The semester will run twelve weeks. For details about class schedules, times and fees, please CLICK HERE.

Please RSVP for the classes you would like your student to participate in by January 10, 2009.  Classes will once again be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 7150 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines, FL 33024.  (Approximately 1 mile west of the Florida Turnpike and immediately east of the BCC Campus.)

There is a $35.00 registration fee per family/per semester, to cover the facility costs.  Also, each class has it's own additional fees/costs.  CLICK HERE for details.

Space is limited in each class so please reserve your spot as soon as possible.

Each family must complete the Code of Conduct & Registration forms. These forms are available on-line by CLICKING HERE.

We can still add a few more classes to the schedule if anyone is interested in teaching a class on Wednesday or Thursday such as, but not limited to, Spanish, Math, Home Economics, etc.  Please let us know AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you are interested in teaching a class.

Shirley will be presenting, "Simplicity as a Way of Life".  With more churches than ever, more books to choose from, and abounding ways of doing things faster, why do we still feel we are missing so much of what matters?  In this practical, but convicting talk, be prepared to find ways to simplify home, church, relationships, finances, and even homeschooling.  Full of ideas, you will be encouraged to de-clutter your life and set new goals to help you have a more meaningful life.

Gus and Shirley Solis have been married since 1993. They have five children and are based in Homestead, Florida. Cost: $10 per attendee ($8 per attendee who has already ordered a 2009 Florida Homeschool Prom ticket.)

  The purpose of a spelling bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage which will help them throughout their lives.

Homeschool Week in Broward County
and in the City of Fort Lauderdale
Sunday-Saturday, February 22-28, 2009
Being Celebrated at Various Locations Throughout South-Florida (See Below)
  Broward Christian Homeschoolers (BCH) is VERY pleased to announce Broward County Mayor Stacy Ritter, Fort Lauderdale City Mayor James Naugle, and Hollywood City Mayor Peter Bober have officially recognized the homeschooling families in our district!

At 11:00am on Thursday, February 26, 2009, Broward Vice-Mayor Ken Keechl presented Broward County Mayor Stacy Ritter's official Proclamation declaring February 22-28, 2009 as Homeschool Week in Broward County.  The ceremony was held at the Broward Library's main branch in downtown Ft. Lauderdale.  (CLICK HERE for more information and to see a copy of Mayor Ritter's Proclamation.)

Also, on February 17, 2009, Ft. Lauderdale City Mayor James Naugle issued an official Proclamation in recognition of homeschoolers, and which declared February 22-28, 2009 as Homeschool Week in Fort Lauderdale.  (CLICK HERE for more information and to see a copy of Mayor Naugle’s Proclamation.)

Additionally, Hollywood City Mayor Peter Bober issued a Congratulatory Letter on February 2, 2009, in recognition of the home schooling families of Hollywood.  (CLICK HERE for more information and to see a copy of Mayor Bober's letter.)

These three historic events, and various activities have been coordinated by board members of the Broward Christian Homeschoolers (BCH), but they are not exclusive accolades of any one person or group.  Rather, these achievements are in recognition of the accomplishments and dedication of the many families who have homeschooled in these two cities during the 25 years home education has been legal in Florida.

What: Science Fair.  There will be teams of different grade levels: elementary, middle school and high school.

When: Set-Up is at 6:00PM & judging will begin at 6:30PM.

Cost: $3.00 per student.

Where: Fellowship Hall at Trinity Lutheran Church.

GEOGRAPHY BEE

What: There will be teams of different grade levels: elementary, middle school and high school.

As usual, this event is open to ALL homeschooled and virtual schooled middle school & high school students, as well as homeschool alumni.

Prizes: For the students with the most Irish spirit.

Standardized Testing: Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS)

Once again, BCH is opening it's doors to any homeschool families wishing to have their student(s) take the Iowa Basic Skills Test.

What: Annual Standardized Testing (Iowa Test of Basic Skills)

Where: Trinity Lutheran Church, 7150 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines (West of the Florida Turnpike and east of BCC Campus on the SE corner of 72nd Ave. & Pines Blvd.)

When: Monday, March 30, 2009 (8:30am - 2:30pm)

Cost: $30.00 per student.  CLICK HERE for the required registration form.

RSVP: You MUST register your child by March 23, 2009.

This year's testing will once again be administered by Joanna Mueller.  Joanna has provided annual testing and personal evaluations to our homeschool community for over 15 years.  You MUST register you child by contacting Joanna by March 23, 2009.

Florida Law requires a homeschool student has an annual education evaluation, which can be administered by a Florida certified teacher of your choosing.  You are required to have your child(ren) tested annually and submit the evaluation to the school board's superintendent's office no later than one year from the anniversary your letter of intent date.
 
Alternatives to having an evaluation performed include; personal evaluation, any nationally-normed student achievement test administered by a certified teacher, a state student assessment test, a psychological evaluation or any other method mutually agreed upon by the parent and the superintendent.


Annual Talent Night, Arts & Craft Show, and Bake Off Contest

This is the night for our students to shine and share their talents!

Students will have the opportunity to display their art work & creative writings, share their culinary baking talents, present a monologue, play music, read poetry, sing, dance, or anything else they would like to share.

When: Tuesday, April 7, 2009 (2:00pm - 4:00pm)

Where: TY Park, 3300 N Park Road, Hollywood, FL (Pavilion #8)

Cost: $2.00 per student to cover paper goods, decorations and craft.

Each family is asked to also bring a dessert and a liter of punch, juice or lemonade to share with other families.
 
Also, we are planning to once again make Resurrection eggs and an egg hunt.  We need empty egg cartons to prepare before hand and candy to fill plastic eggs.  If you would like to help, please bring your empty egg cartons and/or a bag of candy to either the next support group meeting or co-op class.  Thank you for  your help.

BCH's Annual Used Curriculum and Book Sale

Come save money and have a chance to see materials hands-on.

When:  Thursday, May 14, 2009 (7:00pm - 9:00pm).  Set up for sellers will be at 6:00pm.

Cost: Sellers ($3.00) / Attendees & Shoppers (NO COST)

RSVP: Those interested in selling materials must RSVP by May 7, 2009 to bchsupportgroup@bellsouth.net.

All money collected from Sellers will be used towards a love offering for the church for the use of their facility
